Bangkok Prostirution - Thai Girls, Sex

Prostitutes can be had for "shorttime", which is typically for up to two hours plus round trip transit time to the local short time hotel. Alternatively, they can be taken for "longtime", to sleep with you in your home or hotel, for a domestic vacation to the beach or ancient ruins, to a movie and dinner, etc.

Mainstream Thai girls are not available in a sex-for-money arrangement. I've sometimes heard guys say that in Thailand you can take girls off the street for a shorttime sex encounter. This practically never happens. The only place you're going to get a shorttime girl is in a place with prostitutes. Outside of those places, you will get only negative (and usually harsh) reactions from a proposition. It is important that you know when you're in a prostitution area and when you are outside it. Any lady smiling at you outside a prostitution area usually does not have sex on her mind at all, just like in any other country.

There are generally three kinds of places to pick up a prostitute:

Go-go bars Massage parlors Freelancer pickup joints

The following is only a brief overview, for those who need a guide to orient them to the rules and customs so that you will be able to go practically anywhere and know what to do.

Go-Go Bars
Go-go bars are beer bars with girls as fulltime employees. These places are defined by the following:

The girls are fulltime employees of the bar and work the same daily schedule
If you take the girl outside of the bar, you must pay an established, non-negotiable "bar fine" to the bar (e.g., 500 baht), in addition to what you pay the girl
You pay the girl separately for the sexual encounter, as you negotiate with the girl (e.g., 1000 baht, more or less)
The girls are not required to go with any man who wants them, but can choose of their own free will whether to go with you
The girls are paid a small salary to work at the bar, equivalent to entry level factory work. In addition, they make some money on "lady drinks", i.e., if you buy then a coke or orange juice, they get a small commission. If they go out for sex, they keep all of that money, except the bar fine which is usually kept in full by the establishment that employs them. Some such establishments have a quota on how many times a girl must be "bar fined" per month in order to remain employed and get her salary, e.g., 8 times.

There are two kinds of beer bar:

Dancing go-go bars
Non-dancing go-go bars
In the dancing go-go bars, there are one or more stages where the girls dance, usually in a bikini swim suit or underwear. Some of these places have topless dancers, and some offer totally nude dancers at times during the night (who get a slightly higher salary). Many of these bars have scheduled sex shows of various sorts. They usually have no door as the entrance is instead a hanging curtain, and they are always air-conditioned. You walk in, find a place to sit down, and a waitress serves you whatever you want to drink. Beer is usually priced reasonably at around 70 baht per bottle, plus or minus 10 baht (about $2), and that's all you owe them. The girls take turns dancing on the stage for a few songs at a time and mixing with the men sitting down. These bars are usually found in a few entertainment complexes. In Bangkok, the farang oriented dancing go-go bars are found in:

Patpong (between Silom and Surawongse Rds.), very touristy
Nana Entertainment Plaza (NEP) (Sukhumvit soi 4), more ex-pat
Soi Cowboy (between Sukhumvit soi 23 and 21), more ex-pat
The non-dancing go-go bars are usually open air bars with no air conditioning, though there are some with air conditioning. All three of the above entertainment complexes have non-dancing open air bars, though they are a small minority of the bars there. Two other farang areas exist with non-dancing go-go bars:

Buckskin Joe Village, under the expressway where Sukhumvit becomes Phloenchit
The bars named after artists on Sukhumvit 33, mainly ex-pat
In addition, there is Clinton Plaza between Sukhumvit sois 13 and 15. Most of these open air bars are frequented by groups of men who are not looking for a girl for pick-up. However, some of these bars will let you take an employee with you if she wants to go and if you pay a bar fine. Inside are some air conditioned bars, and a go-go has opened up on a high floor.

There are other go-go bars outside of the farang areas (which usually aren't called "go-go" but which are essentially defined by the above 4 rules), but I do not cover them here. You would need to be able to speak Thai at those places, and if you can speak Thai, then you have been here long enough to find those places.

When you are interested in taking a girl from a go-go bar, you have two choices:

"Short time", up to two hours at a shorttime hotel plus transit time
or

"Long time", i.e., bring her back to your home or hotel overnight
The advantages of the go-go bars to ex-pats are:

The girls are used to farangs
The girls have usually learned enough English to communicate the basics and negotiate a price
The girls are unlikely to steal from you or give you any problems because they are accountable to their employer
Two other sections you should be interested in are on shorttime hotels and condoms. You should know that some high end hotels don't allow prostitutes into the hotel with guests for security and/or image reasons. However, most do allow the girls in, though usually the girl has to drop off her ID card at reception, which she can pick up when she leaves. Shorttime hotels do not ask for the girl's ID card.

The usually alloted time in a shorttime hotel is 2 hours. However, if you want to take all two hours then you should make this clear to the girl beforehand, because many guys have complained that their girl wanted a quick sexual encounter and then to return to the bar.

Some bars in Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy have a place in the back of the bar where you can go for a quickie for about 200 baht. However, most do not.

Typical price is 1000 to 1500 baht, more or less. However, some girls will not state a price, but leave it up to your generosity. This does not mean they are free. They may be shy to ask for a price. It is also a custom in some circles to politely leave the generosity up to you. This is more common with freelancers (see below) than bar girls, but occurs both ways. The main point here is that they aren't free just because they didn't state a price beforehand.

In Patpong, you should not go to any second floor places unless you are accompanied by another farang who knows the minority of second floor places which are safe. Many of the second floor places are traps. They will give you an exhorbitant bill and block the way to the door with big guys. If you ever find yourself in this predicament, do not fight, just negotiate and pay your bill, try to get a receipt, and go straight to the tourist police on Surawongse Road. You might be able to get some of your money back. Again, this is a problem in Patpong, not on Sukhumvit.

Massage Parlors
Massage parlors, or "ab op newut" in Thai, are establishments which have the following:

The girls are fulltime employees of the bar and work the same daily schedule
You take the girl to a room inside the establishment for your encounter, not outside
You pay one established fee for everything, non-negotiable, and typically 1500-2500 baht
The girls ARE required to go with whichever man who wants them, and cannot choose of their own free will whether or not to go with whoever chooses them
You are brought to a room inside where there is a big tub bath and a bed
The usual routine is the girl bathes you, applies a condom, gives you oral sex and/or gives you a soapy massage with her breasts and/or and slides down to intercourse and/or continues on the bed

These places should not be confused for "traditional massage" places. The latter are real massage, not including sex. The sex-massage places normally do not include a real massage.

These establishments are more popular for Asians than for westerners, though many westerners frequent these places as well.

When you walk in the door, you will see girls sitting together in a central section for viewing behind a large glass window. They may be wearing swimsuits or some special uniform linguerie unique to that establishment. They are all wearing a unique number. You decide which one you want and tell the man who has the microphone. He calls the number and you meet near the cashier. You pay your money and she brings you to the room for the above routine. Note: You do not talk to the girl before deciding to take her.

The slang phrase for these places is "fish bowl", whereby you choose which fish to scoop out of the bowl.

A few can be found in the Patpong area, and there are a few standing alone in scattered places down sois on Sukhumvit. Petchburi Rd., which parallels Sukhumvit about a kilometer north, is the main strip of massage places. However, you can find massage places all over Bangkok, and indeed can usually find at least one in almost all major towns.

There are many taxi and tuk-tuk drivers with glossy brochures of massage parlors. The selection of girls in the parlors are almost never as nice looking as the girls in the photo in the brochure. However, girls in massage parlors are often prettier than girls in bars, since the massage girls are successful based solely on their looks, whereas girls in bars can interact with customers first. Notably, since Thai men like white skinned girls, then practically all massage parlors that cater mainly to Thai men will have girls with whiter skin on average than bars in farang areas. In fact, most girls in farang area bars consider themselves dark skinned.

Freelance Pick-Up Joints
These establishments have the following in common:

The girls are not employees of the bar, but are allowed to hang out there even if they don't consume food or drink, because they attract farang male customers
The girls are free to come and go as they wish
You do not pay the establishment anything for the girl
All prices and terms are negotiated solely between you and the girl
The main freelance pick-up joints are:

The German beer garden on Sukhumvit soi 7, afternoon to approx. midnite
Thermae, under Ruamchit Hotel near Sukhumvit soi 15, approx. 11pm to 2am
Angels disco in Nana Hotel, Sukhumvit soi 4, approx. 11pm to 2am
Hard Rock Cafe (ground floor has freelancers), 7pm to 2am
Vibrations disco (mixed mainstream and freelancers) under Novotel Siam Square, approx. 10pm to 2am
Spasso, under Erawan Hotel, has some "hi-class" freelancers in the mix, 7pm to 2am
King's Lounge discotheque in Patpong, from around 11pm to 2am
Country Road, end of Soi Cowboy on soi 21 side, 9pm to 2am

You should note that the streets get crowded after 2am when the girls who work at go-go bars get off work.

The closing times vary according to the political climate. When I arrived in 1994, many places didn't close until sunrise. The current Thai Rak Thai administration has been closing all establishments between midnight and 2am depending upon their location and how long they have been in business.

The main advantages of the above freelance pick-up places are:

No bar fine to the establishment, i.e., lower overall cost
If you have a protracted relationship, these girls are not obligated to return to the bar on their daily schedule (especially useful for travelling together)
If you have a protracted relationship, you wouldn't have to pay repeated "bar fines", only your negotiated daily rate for the girl
Some of the girls in freelance places have not been in prostitution for long and have never worked in any other kind of prostitution establishment (though many others have been in prostitution for very long and have "graduated" to the level of freelancer)
The main disadvantage of these places is:

The girls are unaccountable if they do anything bad to you
The vast majority of cases of theft and druggings come from girls picked up at freelance places. While most girls at these places are safe, the ones who are thieves generally work at these places. On the other hand, the professionals tend to go after tourists rather than take a risk with anyone who lives in Thailand and whom they would have a high chance of running into again in the future.

Two other sections you should be interested in are on shorttime hotels and condoms. Rates vary between 250 and 350 baht for shorttime. The usually allotted time is 2 hours. Introduction
Prostitution exists in almost all cultures and civilizations of the world today. Just as the cultures differ richly from one another, prostitution and prostitution policy vary greatly throughout the globe. Although the act of prostitution itself is widely similar all over, the policies that are affecting the sex trade are the most influential in shaping the unique and individual sex industries of different countries. This paper takes a look at two very different countries with very different cultural value systems within them. Not surprisingly their perspectives on prostitution differ significantly as well. These two nations are Canada and Thailand; classic examples of Western culture and Eastern culture. We have found no study that suggests that prostitution is more prevalent in either culture, but in general prostitution carries less of a social stigma in Eastern Nations, especially Thailand, than it does in the Western Nations.
To begin with we shall examine the specific prostitution legislation within each country, but as we shall soon see the difference between legislation and practice is remarkable. Although prostitution has existed for thousands of years, laws controlling the nature of the sex trade are only a few hundred years old. An epidemic of sexually transmitted disease in 16th century Europe, led to the first serious efforts to control prostitution, as public health considerations demanded further regulatory legislation. Morality and cultural ethics have also played a huge role in determining the position of prostitutes in society. When analyzing the difference between the Canadian sex trade and the Thai sex trade, it is extremely important to keep in mind how Judeo-Christian ethics form the foundation of the Canadian policy.

Prostitution laws in Canada
Throughout Canada’s history, prostitution has been legal. However, a visitor or even a citizen may never be aware of this fact. This is due to the impeding laws stated in the Canadian criminal code. Canada has a very clear position on prostitution in theory. Part VII of the Canadian criminal code; Laws pertaining to prostitution, state that “bawdy houses” are illegal (Criminal Code sections 210 and 211), procuring and living on the avails of prostitution of another person are also prohibited (section 212). Procuring and living on the avails are indictable offences, which carry terms up to ten years in prison. If a person under the age of 18 is involved, the term increases to 14 years in prison. A common bawdy house is a place, which is occupied or used by at least one person for the purposes of prostitution. “Keeping” a bawdy house is an indictable offence liable to up to two years in prison (section 210 (1)). Being found in a bawdy house is a summary offence; the offender will receive a maximum term of six months in prison and/or a $2000 fine (sections 210 (2) and 211). Offences in relation to Prostitution focus mainly on acts committed in the public eye, including women attempting to stop moving vehicles, impeding the regular flow of pedestrians, or making an attempt to communicate with others with the intent to offer sexual services (section 213(1)), these are all considered summary offences.
Although the written laws against prostitution are relatively clear, the overall goal of Canadian prostitution is not. There is no prohibition of the buying and selling of sexual services. This is what makes the Canadian law on prostitution unclear. A set of codes has been created so that it would be very difficult for a person to prostitute without breaking the laws, however the avenue of prostitution is still accessible. One may conclude from the criminal code that the government’s purpose in regard to prostitution is to keep it off the streets and out of the public eye. There are many large municipalities who facilitate the off-street trade by means of licensing it and regulating it. In this case, laws against prostitution are rarely enforced. At the same time, Canadian politicians have almost entirely abolitionist views concerning prostitution, regardless of the fact that prostitution itself is legal. The “prostitution problem”, which erupted in the early 1980’s, was not so much concerning prostitution itself, but the spread of the street trade. The Fraser Committee1, the Special Committee on Pornography and Prostitution was established in 1983 to make recommendations for Prostitution policy making. In 1977, in Toronto there was a ‘clampdown’ on massage parlors and other venues after the sexual assault of a shoeshine boy on Toronto’s Young Street strip2. However, after making tighter regulations, the un-expected result was only more street prostitution. The Fraser Committee concluded that the main problem in Canadian prostitution law is that “it is at odds with itself”3 [The Fraser Institute, Canada], if prostitution is to remain legal, the legislature must decide where it is to be permitted and under what circumstances.
Canadian laws of prostitution are definitely un-clear. Many Canadians may be led to believe that the act of prostitution is illegal, because it is treated so. The problem remains on the streets of major cities and ‘slums’ because it is not tolerated anywhere else. Political leaders maintain their abolitionist views and citizens voice complaints about the effects of street prostitution (noise, traffic congestion, litter and harassment). "Porn is many boys' first form of sex education," says Dr Flood, "and the problem with this is that most heterosexual porn offers narrow stereotypes of women as big-breasted nymphomaniacs and men as well-hung studs always ready for sex. Porn rarely connects sex to intimacy and loving affection."
Unfortunately, because of ethical constraints, The Australia Institute was not able to question children younger than 16 in their survey, so their exposure to pornography can only be guessed at.

What it's fair to say is that there is a significant number of young Australian males whose first glimpse of the sexualised female is her engaging in graphic, maybe even violent, hardcore sex.

Director Francis Ford Coppola once quipped that if the James Bond classic Octopussy was made today, it would be named Octo-anal such is the pervasive influence of pornography and its pushing of conventions, fetishes and orifices.

In a Sydney Morning Herald article published last year, Professor James Ogloff, a clinical and forensic psychologist at Monash University said he believed between 10 and 20 percent of Internet porn users accessed "not just pictures of women or men having sex" but "images that we would have been surprised at just a few years ago".

"If you'd asked me two years ago how many people are interested in serious S & M, or who are bisexual or interested in children, we all would have grossly underestimated the numbers. It's almost like we're seeing a virtual sexual revolution," said Ogloff.

Dr Flood says "pornography is attractive to heterosexual men in part because in the porn universe, women are always ready for sex and eager to please, there is no criticism of men's performance, and there's no need to do that hard work of building trust and intimacy."

You have to wonder what that means when a kid's first taste of sexuality is anal or group sex, re-enacted gang rapes or the sort of degradation all too common on some websites that sees male performers spit in the mouths of females.

In his essay 'Big Red Son', American writer, David Foster Wallace, says: "In-your-face vileness is part of the schizoid direction porn's been moving in all decade. For just as adult entertainment has become more 'mainstream' ... it has also become more extreme and not just on the Bizarro margins."
"In nearly all hetero porn now, there is an emphasis on anal sex, painful penetrations, degrading tableaux, and the (at least) psychological abuse of women."

"In certain respects this extremism may simply be porn's tracing Hollywood's own entertainment arc: It's hardly news that TV and legit film have also gotten more violent and explicit and raw," says Wallace.
It's a sobering thought that many young men may now consider these sort of extreme sexual acts as "normal" and young women, exposed to the demands of these men, consider compliance with them reasonable.

I’ve previously talked about my experiences in legalized prostitution in Nevada, now it’s time to talk about Australia. I lived in Melbourne, Victoria for about four years during the first half of the 90s and returned to prostituting about a year and half before I left the country permanently. I believe I’ve mentioned that I had planned on prostituting when I first arrived there, but after a few interviews at legal brothels I elected to “go straight”, having decided that legalization wasn’t for me, due to the loss of control over myself.

I think this is the ultimate irony of legalized prostitution. Women in voluntary illegal prostitution have much more control over their decisions on how to prostitute themselves than women working in legal systems. At the same time, legal systems do nothing to reduce illegal prostitution, involuntary prostitution or trafficking in women and girls. In fact, as the articles I am linking to will make clear, legalized prostitution increases all three of these aspects of prostitution. What is also worth noting is that most of the legal brothels operating in both Nevada and Victoria were already operating long before they were legalized and are run by crime syndicates.

So what we are legalizing in reality is organized crime. We are turning CRIMINALS into “respectable” businessmen. These respectable businessmen use their legal brothels to launder the cash that comes in from the illegal brothels and escort services that they are still running.

I came across this pretty excellent rundown for why the systems of legalized prostitution in Australia are failures.

Legalisation makes men more demanding of practices which women do not like and makes women more powerless to resist them because of greater competition, and gives more power to the brothel owners. One result is that there is a greatly increased demand for anal sex. Prostituted women charge more for anal sex because it is always painful but charge extra if the penis is large because that causes particular pain (Barclay, Ingrid. Interactive Processes in Brothel Prostitution. Honours Thesis. University of Melbourne 2001).

It’s not very long and well worth reading the entire article to get a snapshot of how things stand in Australia.

What Happens When Prostitution Becomes Work is a longer (32 page pdf file) exploration of the same subject and how legalized prostitution inflates the size of the sex industry and allows it to morph into other forms. It includes such gems as this about a “Sex Expo”, an industry trade show:

Adult products available at most exhibits conform to stereotypical ideas of women’s sexuality as defined through pornography— large dildos supposed to enhance ‘sex play’ or a video screening of two women (one with her nipples chained together)—whose sexual interplay consists of one woman inserting a medical instrument used for abortions into the other woman’s vagina.

Yeah, that’s the sort of industry we should encourage.

There are many reasons for why I ultimately decided to return to prostitution after a number of years working straight jobs, but the primary reasons were my unhappy experiences with discriminatory employment practices towards legal, foreign workers in Australia, my destructive marriage, and my own damaged self-image. In many respects, it was a lot like giving up on myself.

Prostitution is legal in a number of Australian states, but since I only ever worked in Melbourne, I’ll limit my remarks to my experiences there and how they compare to the system of legalized prostitution in Nevada. A few of the major differences are quite significant —

1.) Melbourne brothels are located in urban and suburban environments, side by side with other businesses (or even homes). Nevada brothels are primarily located in remote areas or near industrial parks. One of the major brothels in Melbourne is a 10 minute walk from the central business district in downtown Melbourne.

2.) In Melbourne brothels, women do shift-work, much like they would at a normal job, going home at the end of the day (or evening). Shifts are generally from 8-10 hours, but can be shorter. Contrast this with the Nevada brothel system in which prostitutes are generally locked up on site for shifts running from 7-21 days at a time, and shifts that average 14 hours a day (and in some brothels the expectation is actually 24/7 availability for the entire shift in the brothel).

3.) Anonymity — legal brothels in Melbourne do not require a license or fingerprint clearance from the sheriff’s dept for prostitutes and many girls work under assumed names since no identification needs to be kept on file (as far as I remember). Taxes are deducted in cash at the end of the shift by the brothel (oh yeah, like all of that money ends up in the govt hands, right!) Nevada labels prostitutes as Independent Contractors and prostitutes receive a 990 at the end of the year, but can probably tell the IRS whatever they like about their job (my favorite was always Consultant). I should note — I believe that all or nearly all jobs in Nevada require some kind of govt. clearance (i.e. fingerprinting), due to the gambling trade.

4.) Health clearances — as noted in the article I linked, health clearances are technically required of all prostitutes working legally in Victoria. In my experience, few brothels bother to demand them. I worked in at least six legal brothels in Melbourne and only one of them required me to get a health clearance and in the six months I worked there I only went to the doctor once. I believe the requirement is actually every 30 days. In Nevada, all of the legal brothels require health clearances before women are allowed to work on the floor and health clearances are required at least monthly if not more often. Note — nowhere is there any health clearance expectation for the men who use prostitutes.

5.) Money — in Nevada, since prostitutes are “independent contractors” (though of course meeting none of the IRS’ set definition for Independent Contractors), they negotiate their own rates for services, but there is always a house minimum (generally $100). The split is 50/50, but then the “independent contractor” is charged for room & board (which is mandatory, n’est pas?) and if a cab or limo driver refers the “client” then the driver gets 25% off the top. So, for example, if I book a “party” for $200 and that winds up being my only booking for the day (which can happen frequently) and a driver was involved, I am now splitting $150 with the house and then charged between $20-35 dollars for room & board (or sometimes just room). Not exactly a get rich scheme is it? In Melbourne, all of the brothels have a standard rate card and all visits are book based on time, not service (because all “standard” services are to be delivered). “High class” brothels generally only have rates available for 1 hr. plus. At the time I was working, Top of the Town charged $200 for a one hour visit. The majority of brothels though have rates starting at 15 minutes and may charge as little as $30 for a 15 minute visit with a prostitute. Compare this with my standard rate of $200 in Boston back in the 80s, and if the guy was lucky, he might stay with me for as long as 20 minutes. If he was lucky. It probably makes you wonder why anyone would bother to work in a legal brothel, but what it comes down to is you spend most of your time sitting around watching tv and talking trash with the other girls. The camaraderie aspect was significant.

In comparison to my Nevada experience, working in Melbourne brothels was less stressful, more amenable and more lucrative. It was lucrative because the close locations to the city mean very high traffic volumes, but overall I did not make much more mone than I made working 9-5 in a regular job. In comparison to my experiences working illegally in Boston (extremely lucrative) and LA (less so, and I’ll talk about why later), I also ended up seeing many more clients for far less money in Melborne, which is very stressful (though still less stressful than being locked up for 21 days at a stretch and working 24/7).

And it was not just more stressful because of the number of clients I was required to see a day, it was also the requirements for activity with those clients. As a voluntary illegal prostitute working in Boston, I had a whole range of activities I would not do, most of them for self-preservation of my peace of mind and my health. Prostitutes generally need to detach themselves emotionally from the unnatural physical intimacy with strangers, but there are ways of limiting the physical intimacy that many engage in when allowed to do so. Until I started working in legal brothels in Melbourne, I had never allowed any “client” to perform oral sex on me, but in the legal brothel setting this activity is expected and required of every prostitute — as is kissing, hugging, etc.

Two experiences stand out in my mind. At the brothel I worked in the longest, a young woman came in one day to interview with the owner and she held the interview in our parlour. The woman says to the owner “I won’t let anyone go down on me,” and the brothel owner replied, “Then you can’t work here.” The other experience, repeated many times, was the rundown this brothel owner (a woman) would give over the telephone of services. “We provide massage, sex, oral sex, masturbation, hand releases, sex between the breasts, kissing, french kissing, hugging, cuddling,” etc. Cuddling? You want to pay to cuddle with a total stranger? I really don’t get it, or get what a man would receive from that experience that could be in any way fulfilling of his real desire for intimacy with someone. In many ways it makes less sense to me than paying for actual sex, which I regard as the ultimate masturbatory act. In its essence, prostitution is like using someone else’s body for a tissue to catch ejaculate, something quite disposable. It is as empty and unfulfilling as masturbation, but far graver.

Once I was back in prostitution, I spent a couple of months bouncing around between brothels. A couple I left because of management or I wasn’t making any money. One I worked in for a week and then I showed up one day and another girl was standing around outside saying “WTF?” because the place was shut up tight. One place I considered working had both male and female prostitutes and when they showed me around, they also showed me the parlor that was reserved for smoking dope. After a few months of drifting, I finally settled at the brothel referenced earlier in the phone conversation and worked there several months, mostly on the day shift. Neither my husband nor my boyfriend had any clue, nor did anyone else’s significant other. It is quite common in the brothels to have an extra phone line registered under a neutral business name in place for phone calls to and from the clueless.

After several months of high volume prostitution, I found myself experiencing days where it as physically painful to have sex and other girls as well complained about “chafing”. The topic of what made the best lubricant was a frequent source of discussion in the parlour with some girls swearing by pure aloe, and others using various commercial lubricants. If one of the girls came into the room and mentioned a broken condom, the entire place would flip out. Use condoms often enough and you will eventually experience a condom breakage, slippage or tear. It mentions in both reports that many prostitutes never use condoms because the “clients” don’t like them and refuse to wear them, but no one ever talks about this in the parlour. The numbers on the board tell the tale though. We had a marker board in the parlour that listed each girls name and a running tally of the number of clients seen each day, week and month. It was assumed and gossiped about that those girls listing the highest numbers were the ones performing sex without condoms. But it’s all back channel talk because no one ever admits it.

When I finally had enough, I discovered — through another working girl — that the illegal industry was alive and thriving in Melbourne and she referred me to a couple of illegal massage parlours where I could find work that didn’t involve sexual intercourse. There’s actually an entire market of men in the sex trade that do not want to have sexual intercourse with prostitutes, but the legal trade doesn’t cater to them. There are also men who just prefer the thrill of illegality. It should be kept in mind that prostitution is a form of addiction for most men who participate in it and that a lot of the trade is generated by the same guys returning again and again to see a different girl. It is also common for these men to make the rounds of all the brothels in an attempt to see every new girl. It is so clear that they are searching for something that they will never ever find in a brothel.

After I made the switch to the massage parlour (I worked in three) I was back to worrying about law enforcement (a minor worry, as it turned out), but I didn’t have to have intercourse with anyone anymore (massage parlours main business is actual massage with a hand release) and I continued in that business for about six months, right up until the week I left for America.

Next time I’ll talk about my experiences returning to the sex trade in Boston, the trade in Los Angeles, and the BDSM trade which was the biggest aspect of what I did once I returned to the US. And then finally, I get to talk about quitting!

How a sex worker can lower your petrol bills

Sydney - Hot and bothered by rising pump prices? Australian brothels are offering clients discounts based on their petrol bills.

Brothel owners claim the system works much the same way as supermarkets which offer shoppers discounted petrol prices by presenting their grocery bills when they fill up their tanks.

"If you come in and spend time with one of our lovely ladies, we'll give you a discount of 20 cents a litre," Kerry, manager of Sydney brothel The Site, said on Wednesday.

There is no link between brothels, petrol providers or supermarkets but brothels like The Site and Madame Kerry's say the system is simple.

Once you've filled up your car, bring your receipt to the brothel and they'll discount the price of your visit.

The bill for a full 50-litre tank at 126.9 cents per litre comes to AUS$63.45 (about R340). With the offered 20c a litre discount, the petrol bill would have instead come to $53.45.

That $10 difference is taken off the $150 cost of a 30-minute session with one of the brothel's "service providers".

The Site has taken out cut-out newspaper ads offering the service.

"We're getting more media exposure, if you want to put it that way, than basically bums on beds," Kerry said.

Brothels are legal across most of Australia, but states have strict laws against soliciting and running brothels in residential areas, and near churches or schools.

'Pricasso's' penile paint brush a masterstroke at Sydney Sexpo
SYDNEY (AFP) - The 10th anniversary Sydney Sexpo opened with what has to be a world first -- an on-the-spot portrait by a "penile artist" of a "genital origamist".

Artist Tim Patch, who prefers to be known as Pricasso, uses his penis as a brush to execute surprisingly good portraits in acrylic paint.

His subject, Justin Morley who goes by the professional name Alan Length, uses his penis as a puppet, creating everything from hamburgers and windsurfers to the Loch Ness Monster and the Eiffel Tower.

They were the starring acts as the four-day Sydney Sexpo got underway at the former site of the agricultural Royal Easter Show, with a record crowd of more than 55,000 expected to tour the vast halls.

Stands offer an extensive range of sex toys, specialist lingerie, aphrodisiacs, breast and penis enlargement, and bad puns.

Morley, 33, has been in the business for some time, having achieved international renown alongside his brother when they toured the United States in 2001 with their "Puppetry of the Penis" show.

Pricasso, however, is a neophyte in the world of penile art, having taken it up on a dare from a woman friend at a party last New Years' Eve.

A father of four who studied furniture design when he failed to get into a fine arts course and then spent most of his life as a builder, he now paints portraits for about 300 dollars (200 US dollars), with a Sexpo special price of just 75 dollars.

He is a modest, almost shy man, whose efforts to embrace a showbiz persona extend to saying he believes he is the world's only penile artist, but if not, he's "certainly the greatest".

"I still do a bit of building to subsidise my meager income as a struggling artist," he told AFP, adding that his eldest son thought he had a "fantastic job".

Pricasso's budding showmanship also extends to his outfit, all in silver -- a top hat, a long "flasher-type" coat with trouser legs which start at the ankles and end at the knees, and nothing else.

"I was embarrassed to start with," he said before stripping off the coat to paint Alan Length, fully dressed in cape and bare legs. "It sounds really weird but if you see it being done it doesn't look too bad."

He's right on both counts. With show organisers, journalists and scantily-clad women milling around at the media preview, his naked brushwork, using a palette on a low stand and holding the canvas in his hand, soon seems weird but not too bad.

So what did the trail-blazing penile puppeteer Alan Length think of his portrait by the newcomer to the artistic potential of the penis?

"Not bad, considering he did it in 10 minutes," he said.

Morley, makes a living from penis puppetry offering performances at women's "hen's nights" and at sports club fundraisers.

What does his girlfriend think of his job? "When I leave she says 'Good luck with the show, don't let them touch'."

And do the women try to touch? "No, it doesn't turn them on, they just can't believe the shapes I can make."

As for the tools of their trade, the men say they have no problems dipping them in paint -- "acrylic comes off with water" -- or bending them into odd contortions -- "the doctor says I'm fine".

And neither is a braggart. Pricasso says he is proof there is no need to be well-endowed and admits that "probably most men could do an abstract", while Alan Length's publicity material warns that "shows might be slightly shorter in winter."
